Design the set for a play

Set Design for the Adventures of Tom Sawyer

I really enjoyed doing the blog option of finding a costume for a play so I decided to do this one and design a set for another play. I chose to do the play The Adventures of Tom Sawyer because I have seen it before and I really liked it. I am going to be designing the scene that involves the fence being white washed.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is by Mark Twain and it opened on Broadway at the Minskoff Theater on April 26, 2001. The setting for it place around the 1840’s.
The general overview of the play is that Tom Sawyer is a young adventurous boy and he lives with his aunt and half brother. Tom is constantly getting into trouble and for one of his punishments he has to white wash a fence. Tom liked a girl named Becky and at first she doesn’t really like him. Huck is a kid that lives in the woods and he and Tom become pretty good friends. Tom and Becky sneak off in a cave that has treasure in it and they get lost. A scary man tries to get them but Huck shows up and helps them. They all three make it out alive and discover the treasure that was hidden in the cave. At the end, Becky and Tom like each other and Huck moves out of the woods and into the town.
The scene that I am going to design is the scene where Tom has to white wash the fence because he got in trouble for doing something wrong. Tom starts whitewashing the fence but it is a really big fence and it is a very boring task. Tom pretends like it is a lot of fun and he gets his friends to help so he don’t have to do it and the job goes a lot quicker.

This is what the stage will look like. It is a very nice theater, but just a simple stage. The stage is large enough for the scenes and will allow for a lot of movement.

This dirt will be spread on the stage and flattened because this will represent the ground for the scene. The dirt will make it look more real. The dirt will make the road the runs along the fence where the kids stand while whitewashing the fence.

This will be the fence that goes on the stage. It will be placed the whole way across the stage so that the audience can see that there is a lot of fence that Tom has to white wash. It is an old fence. This Fence is what Tom has to white wash for his punishment.

These will be the buckets that the whitewash goes in. These buckets will be along the fence.

These will be the paint brushes that the kids will use while whitewasing the fence. They are large wooden paint brushes.

This is Tom Sawyer who is the main character of the play.

These are Tom Sawyer’s friends that help him whitewash the fence.

When everything is put together, these three pictures represent what the scene will look like.
