Lighting Design for the Lion King
Lighting is a very important part of a production. There is so much involved in lighting. I am going to design the lighting for The Lion King. With the help of the internet I am not going to have any problems finding visuals that will help me further explain and show why I am choosing the lighting design that I am. I am going to choose different colors of lights to express where the scene is taking place and to set the mood and emotions for a scene in the play.
A little background on The Lion King is that it is supposed to become the eighth longest running show in Broadway history. The Lion King opened on Broadway in 1997 and it raised the bar for all the Broadway musicals to follow. The Lion King is a great performance to go see and there are so many lighting designs that go into the making of the lion king.
The Lion King is about how the king of all lions, Mufasa, has a baby lion named Simba. This makes Mufasa’s brother Scar very mad because he was supposed to be next in line to be king. Scar plans to kill Mufasa and Simba. Mufasa ends up getting killed and Simba is told that it is his fault. Scar then becomes king since Mufasa is dead. Simba grows up and returns with some friends and battles Scar and he ends up becoming king. There are many scene settings for this play. There are scenes in the desert and in the jungle, and there are also scary scenes, and happy scenes. I will be designing the lighting for all these different scenes in the play.
Now I will begin to describe my lighting design for the play with the help of visuals.
I will use orange and yellow lighting when there is a scene in the desert. The colors orange and yellow are hot colors and in the desert it is very hot in temperature because the sun is beating down on you.
I will use blue and green lighting when there is a scene in the jungle. Blue and green are cooler colors and in the jungle is it cooler in temperature because the trees provide shade.
When it comes to a scary scene, the stage will be all black and only have a little white light on the stage. This lighting will cause a dark affect and make the scene scarier and create suspense.
When it comes to a happy scene, the stage will be all lit up and consist of a bunch of pretty and bright colors. This lighting will case a happy mood for the audience.
