Costume Design for Grease
I love picking out outfits for people so I decided to take advantage of that and do this option and design costumes for a play that I love. I decided to design costumes for the main characters of Grease, which includes Danny, Sandy, The T-Birds, and The Pink Ladies. I am very excited to create the costumes for these characters in Grease because there are so many pictures on the internet that are going to help me.
Grease is a 1978 American musical directed by Randal Kleiser. Grease takes place in the fifties. The main characters are Danny, Sandy, members of the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies. In the summer Danny and Sandy meet on a beach and fall in love. When summer ends they part for school and hope that their relationship will continue. Sandy ends up going to the same school as Danny and they meet again. Danny and Sandy talk but the love does not seem to be there anymore because Danny is around his friends. At the end, Danny and Sandy decide to change and they are in love again.
For Sandy, at the beginning she is a very conservative young woman so I chose a conservative outfit for her. I would have Sandy wear these dresses at the beginning of the play. Sandy’s hair and makeup would be very nice and neat to go along with the costume. These Costumes show that Sandy is a very nice and sweet young lady.
For Sandy, at the end she changes and become wilder. She is no longer the conservative good girl anymore. Her hair and makeup will be wilder for this costume. She lets herself go and wears this wild costume.
For Danny, he is a member of the T-Birds and he dresses pretty much the same through the play. I designed his costume so that he wears a black shirt and pants and his T-Bird jacket most of the time.
The T-Birds is the groups that Danny hangs out with. They are a wild crowd and they smoke. They all dress alike. They wear jeans with a white shirt with their T-Bird Jackets.
The Pink Ladies is the group the Sandy gets into and they all wear dresses and pink coats. They are also a little on the wild side, but Sandy does not let them persuade her into doing stuff. The Pink Ladies wear dresses and pink coats that have their group name on them. At the end The Pink Ladies are the ones that help Sandy transition into the wilder women she becomes.

Relate theater to your life
How Theater Relates To My Life
This theater class has allowed me to expand my understanding of the world of theater. Now that I have learned about theater, I can see that it can relate to many of my passions. I am going to relate theater to one of my favorite passions, which is hanging out with my friends, including both males and females. I can definitely relate my theater learning to this passion of mine. I can relate theater to my passion of getting together with friends through our conversations, how we dress, and the entertainment that it brings us. When we talk as a group of friends, we tend to act out the stories that we are telling. How we dress depends on where we are going to hang out and what we will be doing. When we get together, it is always entertaining and fun for everyone.
To begin, when I get together with a group of friends there are many different topics of conversation. When we are talking, it is like we are performing as well. There is always someone that says something and kind of acts it out as they are telling the story and everyone else is the audience. Everyone ends up taking a turn acting out a story that they have. This is related to theater because that is what actors do. They tell a story by acting it out. This also relates to theater because the ones that are listening to the story are like an audience.
To continue, how I dress when hanging out with friends varies depending on where we are going. When I get together with friends and we are going somewhere nice to eat, we all dress up. However, if we are getting together to go sit around a fire in the woods, everyone dresses in old clothes. It is like we dress up according to what we will be doing. This is similar to theater because costumes are designed to fit certain settings. In a production, the actors are going to be dressed according to what they are doing like if they are going on a date, they will look nice or if they are having a lazy day at home, they will be dressed down.
Continuing, when I get together with a group of friends, it is always entertaining. Some stories are more entertaining than other stories, but that depends on who is telling it. Some of my friends are real characters while others are not so much. Most of the stories that take place at a get together are happy and funny. This makes everyone laugh and get more involved with the story. However, the entertainment is not always happy. There can be stories that are sad and scary as well. This definitely relates to theater because there are productions that are happy, sad, funny, scary, etc… Actors must show the proper emotion that go with a production in order for the audience to understand the production better.
To conclude, I have learned a lot about theater. I never connected hanging out with friends to theater; however, now I can see where they are connected to each other. Theater occurs in everyone’s life in some form or another. Theater is related to my passion of hanging out with friends by how stories are told and acted out, how we dress according to where we are going and what we are doing, and how everyone gets entertainment out of it. By taking this theater class, it has allowed me to look at my life and see how theater is incorporated into many aspects of my life. I think this class was a great learning experience and helped me to further understand how theater is related to my life. Since everyone is different, theater can be related to everyone’s life in a different way. Therefore, I feel my passion of hanging out with friends can be related to theater in many ways.

Relate theater to your major or minor
How Theater Relates To My Major
I feel theater can be related to every major in some way. My major is elementary education and theater can definitely be related to it. One way that theater relates to my major of elementary education is that as an elementary teacher, I will be performing for my student’s everyday in the classroom and the students will be the audience. The audience is the most important part of the theater and so are the students of a classroom. Another way that theater relates to my major is because now that I have a better understanding of theater I can have my students perform as well and I will be able to guide them correctly. One more way that theater relates to my major is that I will dress and talk to fit the part of being a teacher. Therefore, theater can be related to my major in many ways.
To begin, theater can be described as a place that people gather to watch a performer. This is exactly what my classroom will be like. The students will gather in the classroom as my audience and I will be the teacher that performs in front of the students. I will not necessarily perform a play or a musical, but rather educational techniques. As an elementary teacher I will be performing how to write correct sentences and how to solve math problems as well as many other things. As a teacher, I will be the main character of the performance and the students will be the audience. If a student would participate, they would be a sub character in the performance. One thing that I learned from taking this theater class is that the audience is the most important part of theater. This is because the audience is supposed to gain something from it. This is the same with students and teachers. The students are the most important part for a teacher. Students are the ones that need to learn and get something out of what the teacher is teaching. Therefore, theater relates to my major very well because as a teacher I will be performing and my students will be my audience.
To continue, theater can be a learning experience for everyone. I can use my knowledge of theater and help my students to better understand it. As a teacher, I can have my students act out plays or create little skits and act them out. With my knowledge of theater, I will be able to teach them properly how to do that. They will get to experience theater because they will get to perform in front of an audience. Having the students act out the plays will allow them to learn while having fun. It will also make it easier for the students to learn and understand because it will be acted out and they can see what it happening instead of just reading about it. Therefore, theater relates to my major because I can use my knowledge of theater to incorporate it into my classroom and help my students better understand theater by having them participate in theater based activities.
Continuing, theater includes actors that dress and talk according to the part they are playing. This is exactly what I will do as a teacher. I will dress professionally to play the part of being a teacher. I will also talk professionally and so that the students can understand me because that also goes along with the part of being a teacher. By dressing and talking like a teacher, it will let my students know that I am in charge and will be their educator for the class. Therefore, theater can be related to my major because I will dress and talk to fit the part of being a teacher just like actors do.
To conclude, theater can be related to my major in many ways. Theater is such an involved art that it can be related to almost every major. Theater can be related to my major of elementary education because as a teacher, I will be the performer in the classroom and the students will be the audience. I will also be able to incorporate my knowledge of theater into my classroom to help my students better understand theater. Also, I will dress and talk to fit the part of being a teacher just like actors do for a play. Therefore, theater can be related to my major in many ways and theater was a learning experience for me and it will be a learning experience for my students as well.

Passion piece
The Sound of Music “passion piece”
I have seen The Sound of Music many times and I still love watching it. I love all the songs and know them by heart. I have only seen the movie of The Sound of Music but I would love to see it on Broadway. I will begin by telling you a little about The Sound of Music. The Sound of Music is a musical film and was released in 1965. It was directed by Robert Wise. The film is based off of the Broadway production of The Sound of Music. The songs are written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the musical book is written by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, and the screenplay is written by Ernest Lehman. The movie has won five Oscars as well as many other awards.
The main characters from the movie include:
Maria (the main character) played by Julie Andrews
Captain Von Trapp (father of the children) played by Christopher Plummer
The Baroness played by Eleanor Parker
Max Detweiler played by Richard Haydn
Mother Abbess played by Peggy Wood
The Von Trapp children include:
Liesl played by Charmian Carr
Louisa played by Heather Menzies
Freidrich played by Nicholas Hammond
Kurt played by Duane Chase
Brigitta played by Angela Cartwright
Marta played by Debbie Turner
Gretl played by Kym Karath
The Sound of Music takes place in Austria around 1930’s. At the beginning Maria is trying to become a nun but she is sent to be a governess for the Von Trapp family. Captain Von Trapp is a widowed naval commander and he has seven children. Captain Von Trapp is very strict and has strict rules that he wants Maria to follow. The Captain runs his house like he used to run his ship. The children are not very nice to Maria and they play tricks on her. However soon they start too really like her. Maria teaches the children how to sing and they become really god at it. After a while, Maria finds herself starting to fall in love with the Captain and she runs away because she is afraid to show her feeling. Since Maria does not show her feeling to the Captain, the Captain is soon going to get married to The Baroness. The Captain and The Baroness end up not getting married and The Captain and Maria get married. In the meantime, the Nazis take control in Austria as part of the Anschluss and they want Captain Von Trapp back in service. The Von Trapp family is scheduled to perform in a guarded theater where they will be singing. The family is able to sneak away and they head to Switzerland.
The Sound of Music is not just a great movie, but it is also a favorite of many on Broadway. The original Broadway production opened in November 1959 and the show has been enjoyed since then. The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre is the theater that the show opened in on November 16, 1959. The Sound of Music has also won many awards. It has made it into the Academy Award winning 1965 musical film. For the Broadway production of The Sound of Music, the characters are played by different people than the movie. I have only seen the movie of The Sound of Music, but I would love to experience it on Broadway.
Some history about The Sound of Music is that the musical presents a history of the Von Trapp family, although it is not exactly the same. Captain Von Trapp is anti Nazis and lives in Salzburg with his family. The captain is married to Marie become the Anschluss. The captain decided to emigrate instead of joining the Anschluss. While the Von Trapp family is heading to Switzerland to get away form the Nazis, they actually go to the train station and get on a train headed for Italy. Then they go to London and finally to the United States. If the Von Trapp family would have really hiked over the mountains, they would not have ended up in Switzerland, but in Germany.
The Sound of Music has many Genres. Some of the Genres include musical, family, and drama. The movie has a theme song to it and the song is "the hills are alive with the sound of music". I love that song. I would say that love is a pretty big theme for The Sound of Music because of how the captain and Maria end up falling in love. The Sound of Music is just a great movie and it is also a great production on Broadway.
I chose to write about The Sound of Music for this blog item because I love it. I love all the songs that are sun during the movie and I know them all by heart. Julie Andrews is such a great singer and she really is a great actor in the movie. I love how all the children learn to sing and dance and they love it. I took four years of German and that is one of the main languages spoken in Austria. I really like the house that the Von Trapp family lives in for the movie because it is really nice and elegant. I really enjoy how Maria is able to bring happiness and love into the Von Trapp family. Since the songs of the movie are my most favorite thing, my second favorite thing is how Marie and the Captain fall in love. I think that is a very romantic movie. Overall I just love the whole movie and I have seen it so many times.

Setting: The play takes place in a small town called Frosty Hollow, Oregon during early 1900’s. There is a muddy street that goes through the town and it is lined with market places for the residents to shop at. Lucy lives on the outskirts of town in an old rundown farm house with her family. Lucy does not leave the farm often but occasionally to get some supplies.
One day when Lucy decided to make a cake, she checked to see if she had enough ingredients. Lucy discovered that she did not have enough flour and decided to head into town to purchase some. While Lucy was walking through the market place, she saw this handsome man in the flour shop. Lucy walked into the flour shop and picked up a sack of flour and the handsome man offered to help her with it.
Dan: May I help you young lady with that sack of flour?
Lucy: Why thank you sir, I forgot how heavy they were.
Dan: I’m Dan; it’s nice to meet you.
Lucy: What a pleasure, I’m Lucy and it’s nice to meet you as well.
Dan: I haven’t seen you around here before, did you just move here?
Lucy: I live on the outskirts of town and I don’t come to town very often. Do you live in town?
Dan: Yes I live by myself right up the street behind the post office.
Lucy: Where is your family?
Dan: I grew up in Creek Side and moved here about 5 years ago to work on the railroad.
Lucy: Oh that’s good how do you like it here?
Dan: Yes so far I am enjoying my time here.
Lucy: That’s good, well I better start heading back to the farm. I’m baking a cake for my youngest sister. It is her birthday tomorrow.
Dan: Oh I see, would you like me to help you with getting the flour back to your home.
Lucy: That would be very nice of you, but I don’t want to bother you.
Dan: I would be glad to help out.
Lucy purchases the flour from the market place her and Dan head back to Lucy’s place.
The path to Lucy’s house is a small dirt path and it runs along a river most of the way. Lucy tales about how she would like to move off the farm and get work.
Lucy: Thank you so much for the help. I’m not sure how I would have gotten the flour home if you were not here to help.
Dan: Oh it’s a beautiful day for a walk and I don’t mind.
Lucy: I would love to live closer to town so I could get some work.
Dan: The post office by my house is looking for help if you are interested.
Lucy: That would be great, but the distance is too far for me to travel everyday.
Dan: I can tell the postmaster that you’re interested and see the room on top of the post office is still for rent.
Lucy: That would perfect. I would appreciate that greatly.
Dan and Lucy are still walking on the path to Lucy’s place. They pass through an area that is full of wild flowers and it smells delightful. Dan bends over and picks a pretty yellow flower and gives it to Lucy.
Dan: Here I picked a beautiful flower for a beautiful lady.
Lucy: Why thank you, that is so sweet of you.
Lucy is so glad and blushes.
Dan: I’m glad you like it.
Lucy: I used to pick these kinds of flowers for my mother when I was younger.
Dan: Is that your family’s farm up a head.
Lucy: Yes we are almost there. Only a few more minutes of travel left.
Dan: The path to your place was very nice. I’m glad I got the opportunity to meet you and help you out.
Lucy: I’m glad I meet you to. You are quite the gentlemen.
Dan: Thank you. I will check on the job and room for you and come out to your place and let you know if you would like.
Lucy: Yes that would be very kind of you.

Dan: Yes, the postmaster will hire you and the room is still available.
Lucy: That’s great. I’m excited to start but I know my family will miss me greatly.

As time passes, Lucy is still very happy with her work and being with Dan. Dan and Lucy are very much in love and one day they meet up for lunch and Dan asks Lucy to marry him.
